Etna from one of the mountain's newest stars. Giulia Monteleone started this small estate in 2017 with her father and winemaker Benedetto Alessandro, farming organically on Etna's north slope near the Alcantara river. The 2021 is 95 percent Nerello Mascalese with 5 percent Nerello Cappuccio, raised twelve months in steel and neutral casks, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Only 6,500 bottles exist. Volcanic red with Pinot-like finesse and a saline streak that keeps you pouring.

Brilliant ruby. Dried black cherry, savory herbs, flowers and a smoky spice edge. Silky, polished palate, mounting salinity, fresh saline finish. Twelve percent alcohol, feather-light body.

Grilled swordfish, sausage and fennel pasta, a wood-oven margherita.

The home vineyard is an old two-hectare parcel at about 500 meters, on volcanic sand and gravel near the Alcantara river, 30 meters from a Byzantine chapel. The estate has since grown to seven hectares, all native Sicilian varieties.
