Murdoch Hill Red Blend 2021 Adelaide Hills
$30.00
The Downer brothers, Michael, Andrew, and Henry, farm Murdoch Hill at Oakbank in the Adelaide Hills, and this is their claret-minded blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 20% Sangiovese from the Oakbank and Lenswood vineyards. Hand-harvested, open-fermented, two to four weeks on skins, then ten months in French barriques, only 20% new. Ned Goodwin MW gave it 92 points in the Halliday Companion. Cool-climate Cabernet with soft tannin and bright fruit. Drink it on a Tuesday.
Lifted mulberry and cassis from the Cabernet, bright red and black fruits from the Merlot. Medium bodied, soft fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a persistent red-fruited finish.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
Three Downer brothers run the estate at Oakbank, with Michael Downer making the wines. Fruit is hand-picked from the Oakbank and Lenswood vineyards, destemmed into open fermenters, given extended maceration to sculpt soft tannin, and matured ten months in 20% new French barriques.
