Oak Farm - Chardonnay - 2021

Oak Farm Vineyards farms a 70-acre property in Lodi's Mokelumne River AVA, first planted by gold-rush-era settler William DeVries in 1860 and still shaded by his namesake oak trees. The Panella family bought the historic farm in 2004 and replanted it starting in 2012. This Chardonnay comes from the Elk Vineyard within that sub-AVA, whole-cluster pressed and split between stainless steel and oak, with 18% new oak and full malolactic fermentation before ten months of aging.

Delicate aromas of pear, vanilla flower and hazelnut lead into a linear, well-balanced palate of lemon, lime, chamomile, cut grass and wet stone, with a creamy touch of butterscotch and nutmeg from the oak.

Try it with grilled halibut in lemon butter or a spring vegetable risotto — dishes that won't fight the wine's bright acidity.

Dan Panella, a third-generation California farmer, leads the estate's replanting program and now oversees a portfolio of 14 different grape varieties alongside the Elk Vineyard fruit used here.
