Betty O'Shaughnessy started planting Howell Mountain in 1997, and this estate Cabernet is what those volcanic highlands were always meant for. Winemaker Sean Capiaux blends 89% Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and two heirloom rarities, Saint-Macaire and Carmenère, then ages it two years in 60% new French oak. Big mountain wine with no rough edges. For the steak-night regular ready to graduate from valley-floor Cab, this is the diploma.
Blueberry, plum and graham cracker with a pine-needle herbal edge. Full-bodied and concentrated yet plush, tannins soft and long, no heat on the finish despite the mountain ripeness.
