Paolo Cottini Amarone 2018 750ml
$96.00
Amarone from a real family cellar, not a factory. Paolo Cottini is the third generation making wine in Valpolicella, with vineyards in the Negrar valley and Valgatara. For this Classico, Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella dry for 90 to 110 days before a 35-day fermentation, then 30 months in French barrique and a year in bottle. Falstaff gave the 2018 91 points. Big, silky, opulent Amarone for the bold-red crowd, priced under the famous names.
Red cherry, cassis and dark plum layered with dried fruit, tobacco and cigar box. Full-bodied and silky, with dark chocolate, coffee and mocha depth, firm tannins and a smooth, powerful finish.
Osso buco, risotto all'Amarone, a board of aged Monte Veronese. Or a fireplace and nothing else.
Paolo and Sara Cottini work from Castelrotto, a hilltop medieval village in San Pietro in Cariano; Paolo learned the craft from his father Silvano. Vines sit in two sites: Ca' del Gallo in the Negrar valley at about 580 meters and Valgatara at 250 meters.
