Poppone Italian Red 2021 750ml

The register just says Poppone, but this is Antonutti's appassimento red from Friuli in Italy's northeast. It is 80% Merlot dried before pressing, Amarone-style, blended with 20% of the rare native Pignolo that rests 12 months in tonneaux before the final marriage in bottle. Generous, dense and plush, with a serious core of berries and sweet spice; the 2021 pulled a 90-point critic score and earlier vintages took gold in Brussels and at Mundus Vini. Friuli's baby Amarone.
Red berries, sweet cherries and warm spice on the nose. Full-bodied with plush tannins, ripe and dense through the middle, sweet-spiced berry finish.
Braised short ribs, salumi and aged Montasio, mushroom polenta on a cold night.
Antonutti is a family winery in Friuli-Venezia Giulia bottling Poppone under the Trevenezie/delle Venezie Rosso IGT. Soft pressing with maceration and fermentation in steel; only the Pignolo sees wood.
