Remhoogte is the Boustred family's estate on the Simonsberg foothills of Stellenbosch, where father Murray and sons Chris and Rob farm steep slopes and ancient soils cooled by Atlantic wind. Aspect Merlot 2018 is their premium-range answer to Merlot doubters: dark, structured, genuinely serious. Platter's gave it 4.5 stars, Wine Mag 94 points, Wine Advocate 90. A South African Merlot with eight years of age for thirty dollars is a quiet steal. Hand it to the Bordeaux drinker.

Dark and brooding. Ripe currant, cherry, and plum over white pepper and cedar. Full, juicy palate, polished tannins, and lively acidity that carries freshness through a long finish.

The estate calls for rich beef and lamb, tomato-based stews and curries, biltong, and aged cheeses. Oxtail potjie if you can swing it.

Remhoogte has been family-farmed for over three decades on the Simonsberg's foothills, wildlife roaming between the blocks. Chris Boustred leads the winemaking with a patient, terroir-first approach the family sums up as wine that is never rushed or forced.
