Schloss Vollrads - Spatlese Riesling - 2019

Schloss Vollrads has been making wine in the Rheingau since 1211, which makes it one of the oldest continuously run wine estates on earth. Its 200 acres are planted entirely to Riesling, and this Spatlese is late-harvest fruit picked without botrytis -- a cleaner, purer style of sweetness than a Beerenauslese or Eiswein. The sugar and acid sit in real balance here, which is the whole point of German Riesling done right. Good for someone who thinks they don't like sweet wine.

Electric lemon-lime acidity carries peach, apricot and tangerine fruit, with a delicate, lacy sweetness lingering on the finish. Clear and pure, not heavy.

Spicy Thai or Szechuan dishes -- the sweetness and acid both stand up to chili heat.

Schloss Vollrads traces its winemaking history to 1211, making it one of the oldest continually run wine estates in the world. The Rheingau property farms roughly 200 acres, planted exclusively to Riesling.
