Napa Cabernet with a New Orleans soul. Chris Agan retired from the Navy, then from Lockheed, then started over as a harvest intern at Joseph Phelps at 55. He named his flagship Cabernet for the Big Chiefs of the New Orleans Black Masking Indians, and the label painting hangs in his home, bought from a French Quarter gallery. The 2019 is St. Helena valley-floor Cabernet aged 22 months in 75% new French oak. Dark, packed with flavor, no heavy tannins. Small-lot Napa with a real story.

Blackberry, plum and dark cherry with chocolate, graphite and tobacco; mocha and vanilla emerge with air. Full and satiny, fine chewy tannins, a long finish where the fruit outruns the oak.

Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.

Second Line launched with the 2017 vintage and makes about 800 cases a year. The 2019 Big Chief comes from a small St. Helena valley-floor vineyard; from 2021 onward the wine moved to Brioso Vineyard high on Mt. Veeder.
