Shatter Grenache Red Wine - 2022 750 ml
$30.00
Shatter is Dave Phinney of Orin Swift and Joel Gott making Grenache in Maury, deep in French Catalan country. Hillside vines planted over 60 years ago in black schist give the raw material, the fruit takes a 30-day cold soak, and the wine ferments and ages at Phinney's own Maury winery with French oak to round the edges. James Suckling gave the 2022 93 points. Grenache with the volume turned up: dark, plush, unapologetically big. Steak night wine.
Black cherry, blackberry, black pepper, and star anise. Full bodied, ripe, and deep in dark fruit, drenched in fine-grained tannins, balanced by structure through a long finish.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
Hillside Grenache vines over 60 years old grow in black schist, the slate-like rocky soil around Maury in the Roussillon. Post-harvest the fruit cold-soaks for 30 days to concentrate before fermenting and aging at Phinney's winery in Maury.
