Sottimano Langhe Nebbiolo 2024

Sottimano is one of Neive's benchmark Barbaresco families, and this Langhe Nebbiolo is declassified Barbaresco in all but name. It comes entirely from Basarin, a historic 3.7 hectare cru whose younger vines, around 15 years old, the family holds out of the DOCG until they mature. Native yeast fermentation, about 25 days on the skins, malolactic in French barrels coopered by Francois Freres. Baby Barbaresco is the honest pitch. Reviews for 2024 are not out yet; the pedigree is.
Rose petal, red cherry and the spice and licorice edge Basarin fruit is known for. Medium bodied, fine firm tannins, fresh acidity, uncommon complexity for the category.
Tajarin with mushrooms, prosciutto and figs, veal Milanese.
Basarin sits at high altitude on the border of Neive and Treiso, and the family credits that position for the wine's spice, licorice note and structure. The parcel is farmed and vinified exactly like their Barbaresco crus.
