Sutherland Syrah 2021 750ml
$24.99
Gyles Webb built Thelema into a Stellenbosch icon, then bought a former apple orchard in cool, high Elgin in 2002 and planted Sutherland Vineyards. The vines sit 140 to 250 meters up, nine kilometers from the Atlantic, and that cold air shows in the glass. The 2021 Syrah is peppery and savory, closer to the northern Rhône than to jammy shiraz. South Africa is still the best value in serious Syrah, and this bottle is the argument.
Ripe blackberry and plum with violet, black pepper and smoky cedar. Vibrant acidity, juicy black cherry, cured meat and graphite complexity, and a long finish of black fruit and white pepper spice.
Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, wild mushroom risotto, or a charcuterie board with aged cheese.
Sutherland is the Webb family's Elgin property in the Overberg mountains, purchased in 2002 with first wines released in 2005. Gyles's son Thomas Webb now leads the estates. Altitude and Atlantic proximity make Elgin one of South Africa's coolest fine-wine districts.
