W. Clarke and Elizabeth Swanson founded Swanson Vineyards in 1985 on a hundred acres along Oakville Cross Road, and hired the legendary André Tchelistcheff to consult on the early wines. The 2021 Napa Cabernet is full bodied and classically built: black cherry, cassis, graphite and violets over firm, well-knit tannin, with a drinking window through 2030. Real Oakville pedigree at a price most Napa Cab forgot how to hit. Steak night has its bottle.
Blackcurrant, plum, violet and graphite on the nose with dark chocolate and tobacco spice. Lush, muscular palate of cassis, dark cherry, espresso and oak char. Long grippy finish.
Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, braised short ribs.
The original Oakville facility was purchased in 1986 and renovated in 2000. Swanson built its reputation on Merlot, Pinot Grigio and the Alexis Cabernet, with a tasting salon styled after 1850s Paris.
