Napa Merlot done the old way. Swanson's 2019 is 76 percent Merlot with 24 percent Cabernet Sauvignon folded in for backbone, from vines rooted in fluvial soils left behind by the wandering course of the Napa River. A cool 2019 spring trimmed the crop, and the long, even season that followed shows up as balance in the glass. Dark, plush, structured, built for the table. Real Napa at a price Napa mostly forgot.
Dark scarlet, nearly opaque. Plum, crushed red fruit, dried oregano, violets, wet slate. Palate of ripe plum, blackcurrant, brown sugar, seasoned leather, and black tea. Soft texture, firm tannins, persistent finish.
Herb-crusted lamb, mushroom risotto, or a proper cheeseburger off the grill.
The vineyard sits on fluvial soils deposited by the shifting Napa River, giving drainage and steady nutrients. In 2019, a wet winter recharged the soils and a cool spring lowered yields before a gradual, even ripening season.
