Same house as our Favugne Pinot Nero: Teanum, founded in 2000 in San Severo, the northern Puglia town that landed the region's first protected designation in 1968. Favugne is the winery's everyday line and this Montepulciano is its comfort-food red. It sees only stainless steel and bottle before release, so the fruit stays front and center. Dark, plump and friendly. The kind of bottle you buy by the case for pizza night.

Dark red in the glass. Rich red berry aromas with a tone of coffee. Ripe cherry and strawberry on the palate, smooth and plump, soft tannins, baking spice, a long aftertaste.

Sausage and peppers, lasagna, soft yellow cheeses, beef or venison stew.

Teanum farms northern Puglia between the Lesina and Varano lakes, the Gargano promontory and the Tavoliere plain, with wineries in San Severo and San Paolo di Civitate. The Montepulciano is matured in stainless steel tanks and bottle, no oak.
