Tenuta San Guido - Guidalberto - Toscana IGT - 2021
$76.00
The second wine of Sassicaia, and the fastest way into the Tenuta San Guido cellar. Guidalberto blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the same Bolgheri estate, aged 15 months in barriques with a small dose of American oak. First made in 2000. The 2021 comes off a vintage the estate's own director called one of its finest, and it drinks like it: dark fruit, graphite, real polish. Buy it for the dinner where Sassicaia money feels silly.
Violets, black cherry, blackberry compote, plum and graphite on the nose. Full-bodied with bright acidity, tight-grained ripe tannins and a coiled structure that opens to turned earth with air.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
Guidalberto vineyards sit between 100 and 300 meters on limestone-heavy soils with marl and pebbles, facing south-southwest. Hand harvested, fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, then 15 months in 225-liter barriques, 40% new, 95% French and 5% American oak.
