The original Super Tuscan. Tenuta San Guido planted Cabernet on the Tuscan coast when the grape supposedly belonged to Bordeaux, and half a century of imitators later the original still leads. The 2022 is 85 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 percent Cabernet Franc from the estate's Bolgheri vineyards, raised about two years in French oak with only a third of it new. Built for the cellar but civilized young. A trophy that actually drinks like wine.

Blackberry, violets and graphite, then cedar, tobacco leaf, rosemary and gravelly earth. Black cherry and dark plum on a mineral palate with firm, polished tannins and a long, harmonious finish.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

For 2022 the estate ran shorter macerations and about 23 months in wood, a third new French oak, to keep the freshness front and center. Critics put the drinking window from 2028 well into the 2040s.
