Terre Rouge - ‘High Slopes’ Syrah - 2017

$69.99

Bill Easton ran a Berkeley wine shop before he became one of the original Rhône Rangers, and High Slopes is his mountain Syrah. It comes from two Sierra Foothills sites above 3,000 feet, one granitic and one volcanic, where summers stay cooler and the grape keeps its smoke and white pepper. Stainless fermentation, 24 months in Burgundy barrels, only 25% new, bottled unfiltered. Côte-Rôtie manners at Amador prices. Syrah people, this is your bottle.

Smoky, meaty Syrah with white pepper, black cherry, dark chocolate, cedar and graphite accents. Full-bodied yet agile, fine-grained tannins, mineral-edged finish.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

Terre Rouge is Easton's Rhône-variety label in Plymouth, in Amador County's Shenandoah Valley, founded with Jane O'Riordan and built on small lots of 100 to 400 cases. High Slopes vines average 25 years old at over 3,000 feet elevation.
