Thelema Mountain Red 2021
$26.00
Thelema Mountain Red is the accessible sibling to Gyles Webb's celebrated Stellenbosch estate wines, made mostly from Thelema's own vineyards on the Sutherland farm in the cooler Elgin valley. The 2021 blends 43% Shiraz, 32% Petit Verdot and 25% Grenache, aged 18 months in older, neutral oak so the wood stays in the background. It's a Rhône-leaning South African red built for weeknight richness rather than ceremony. Good bottle for steak night or anyone who wants Cape red blend character without the flagship-estate price.
Juicy black fruit, mulberry and plum aromas with warm baking spice. Soft, rounded tannins from extended barrel aging, finishing long and spiced.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
Thelema was founded in 1983 by Gyles Webb on the Helshoogte Pass above Stellenbosch. The Mountain Red draws mostly from the estate's own vineyards on the Sutherland farm in Elgin, a cooler-climate site than Thelema's home Stellenbosch vineyards.
