Valtravieso - Gran Valtravieso - 2018

Valtravieso has made Gran Valtravieso in exactly three vintages: 1996, 2016 and 2018. It is Tinta Fina, Ribera del Duero's strain of Tempranillo, from vines over 80 years old, double-sorted in the vineyard and again at the winery. Then the long haul: 36 months in new French oak from three different forests, a year in each, plus 20 months in bottle before release. Ribera at full throttle with the freshness to carry it. For the Vega Sicilia drinker who likes finding things first.
Deep cherry-red with ruby rim. Intense blackberry and dark fruit with undergrowth, sweet almond, chocolate, licorice and mineral spice. Rounded and powerful, with sweet, well-worked tannins and fresh acidity.
The estate calls for roasted or stewed red meats. We say lamb shoulder over potatoes, oxtail braise, or a thick wedge of aged Manchego.
