Venge Vineyards' Cabernet from Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper, an Oakville heritage site farmed for wine since the land was deeded to Missouri Hopper in 1877. The Venge family has grown grapes in Napa since the 1970s, and this bottling shows the softer, prettier side of Oakville: perfume and red fruit where the neighbors flex muscle. A collector vineyard name at a fair price for what it is, and a rewarding pour next to bigger, blunter Napa Cabs.

Cranberry and raspberry pie, lilac, sandalwood and exotic spice; bramble berries, cherry cola, pipe tobacco and black tea with bright acidity and silky tannins.

Missouri Hopper received the land from her father Charles Hopper in 1877. It later formed part of the historic Vine Hill Ranch, and Beckstoffer Vineyards bought it in 1996, placing it under a permanent agricultural conservation easement.
