Venge Signal Fire Old Vine Zinfandel 2022

Old Calistoga Zinfandel the way it used to be done. Signal Fire Vineyard is eight acres in northern Calistoga planted in the early 1900s, head-trained, 100 percent dry farmed, average vine age around 70 years. The site was Calistoga's frost 'signal point,' where smudge pots were lit to warn neighbors of descending cold. Venge ferments with native yeast and ages it 16 months in French oak, 45 percent new. Big, bold and balanced.
Loads of blackberry and briary fruit, white pepper, honeysuckle and crushed herbs. Dense, glass-coating color, viscous full body, long peppery finish. Drinks now, holds six to eight years.

The vineyard is 98 percent Zinfandel with Petite Sirah interplanted among the old vines. Fruit is destemmed, gravity-fed to stainless steel for native carbonic maceration and fermentation, and only free-run juice goes to barrel. Venge's home ranch sits on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga.
