Venge - Terraces - 2019

Kirk Venge is one of Napa's busiest winemakers, a third-generation talent who keeps his best small lots for the family label. The Terraces is his Cabernet bottling from Bone Ash Vineyard, the Venge estate in Calistoga named for the volcanic ash that dusts up from the soil late in the season. Calistoga heat brings dark, generous fruit; long maceration and French oak do the shaping. Tiny production, mostly sold through the winery. Grab it while it sits here.
Concentrated purple. Black and blue berries, French oak vanillin and fresh earth. Black currant, blackberry and black cherry on a polished palate, with the tannin and acid balance to hold a decade plus.
Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.
Venge Vineyards began in 1992 in Oakville; UC Davis-trained Kirk Venge now owns it and makes the wines in Calistoga. Bone Ash Vineyard is cane pruned to Cabernet clones 7 and 8, fermented in concrete and stainless steel with roughly a month on skins.
