Walter Hansel started as a hobby: half an acre of Chardonnay planted by a Sonoma fruit farmer in the 1970s so his family would have wine for dinner. His son Stephen turned it into a real winery in 1996, mentored by neighbor Tom Rochioli, and built the estate's reputation on Burgundian-style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the family's own vineyards near the Sebastopol Hills. This Russian River Valley bottling is the estate's flagship white, structured and site-driven, from a family that's been farming this ground for two generations.

Oak and vanilla frame ripe stone fruit on this vintage, finishing fresh and clean. A structured, Burgundian-leaning style rather than a fruit bomb.

Classic matches for Chardonnay: Roast chicken, lobster or crab with butter, corn dishes, soft creamy cheeses.

Walter Hansel began as a half-acre hobby vineyard planted in the 1970s by fruit farmer Walter Hansel; son Stephen expanded it, founded the winery in 1996, and was mentored by neighboring grower Tom Rochioli. The family now farms 75-plus acres near the Sebastopol Hills, matching Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones to the estate's three soil types.
