Yalumba The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 750ml
$80.00
Coonawarra Cabernet from Australia's oldest family-owned winery. Samuel Smith founded Yalumba in 1849 and his Hill-Smith descendants still run it. The Menzies is the estate Coonawarra Cabernet, grown on terra rossa over limestone and named for Sir Robert Menzies, the Prime Minister who toasted Yalumba's claret in 1966. The 2018 spent 22 months in French, Hungarian and American oak, about a third new. Built for a decade in the cellar. A serious steak-night bottle.
Blackcurrant, mulberry and mint with tobacco, bay leaf and forest herbs. Tightly wound granular tannins, bright acidity, bitter chocolate depth. Ripe but cool-toned, with a long, sweet dark-fruit finish.
Rack of lamb with rosemary is the move. Also a peppered ribeye or clothbound cheddar.
The Menzies Estate Vineyard in Coonawarra is nearly all Cabernet, eight blocks of varied vine ages and clones on terra rossa soil over limestone. Yalumba has bottled The Menzies since 1987 and stays fiercely independent under fifth and sixth generation Hill-Smiths.
