Villa Matilde - Greco di Tufo - 2021

$24.99

Villa Matilde is a Campania estate best known for reviving Falerno del Massico, the ancient Roman wine writers like Pliny once praised, but this bottling comes from Greco di Tufo, up in Irpinia. It's 100% Greco, aged briefly in steel to keep it fresh, with real texture and mineral drive that punches above its price. The Avallone family, who founded the estate in the 1960s hunting down lost Roman-era vines, still run it today.

Straw yellow with a bouquet of white peach, apricot and sweet almond, layered over citrus and clear minerality. Rich and complex on the palate but still fresh, with crisp acid carrying the finish.

Classic matches for a white like this: Seafood, poultry, salads, fresh and soft cheeses.

Founded in the 1960s by Francesco Paolo Avallone, a lawyer obsessed with reviving the ancient Falernian wines of Pliny and Virgil, Villa Matilde is now run by his children Salvatore and Maria Ida. The estate farms across Caserta, Benevento and Avellino, the last being home to the volcanic soils of Greco di Tufo.
