Ancient Peaks' Merlot comes off the same Margarita Vineyard as their Renegade blend, on Santa Margarita Ranch outside Paso Robles. The 2022 is 91% Merlot with small amounts of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah blended in, aged 18 months in French and American oak. This has become one of the region's best-known Merlots, and at this price it's an easy call for anyone who still loves the grape and doesn't want to overpay for it.
Red fruit aromas open things up, joined by dried herbs and toasted oak. Silky texture with a luscious, rounded mouthfeel; medium-full body finishes soft, without heavy tannin.
Classic matches for Merlot: Roast chicken, pork tenderloin, mushroom anything, herbed potatoes.
Margarita Vineyard sits on true ancient sea bed soil, rich in calcium from decomposing oyster fossils, on the Santa Margarita Ranch that three local families have farmed together since 2001. It's the southernmost vineyard site in the Paso Robles appellation.
