Louis Roederer - Cristal - Champagne - 2014

Cristal is Louis Roederer's prestige cuvée, and 2014 is razor-sharp: 60 percent Pinot Noir and 40 percent Chardonnay from the house's organically farmed grand cru plots, with no malolactic and a scant 7 grams of dosage. Wine Spectator scored it 98 and ranked it in the top ten of its Top 100. Buy it for the retirement toast or the fortieth birthday; it will outlast most of the guests.

Pink grapefruit, blood orange, red apple, strawberry and nectarine with fresh-baked bread and toasted hazelnut. Fleshy and expansive, then it tightens to a long, mineral edge.

Classic matches for Champagne: Oysters, fried chicken, potato chips, celebration in any form.

Fruit comes from 45 organically farmed plots across grand cru villages including Verzenay, Aÿ, Avize and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger; in 2014 only 39 plots made the cut. About a third of the wine ferments in oak, with no malolactic and no chaptalization.
