Santadi - Vermentino - Villa Solais - 2021

Cantina Santadi is a cooperative founded in 1960 by 27 growers in the Sulcis area of southwest Sardinia; consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis — the architect behind Sassicaia — helped shape the winery's modern style starting in the 1970s. This Vermentino di Sardegna, labeled Villa Solais, comes from the Lower Sulcis and blends in a small amount of Nuragus alongside the Vermentino. The 2021 vintage picked up 91 points from James Suckling. It's a coastal white built for shellfish and hot afternoons.

Brilliant straw yellow with green-gold highlights. Wild rosemary and white pepper sit under fresh stone fruit and citrus, with sea-spray minerality running through the vibrant, peppery, medium-bodied palate.

Empson (the importer) pairs it with meat- or fish-based first courses, or well-chilled as an aperitif — think seafood pasta over a green salad.

Cantina Santadi is a cooperative of more than 200 growers farming roughly 600 hectares around Santadi in the Sulcis zone of southwest Sardinia, founded in 1960. Consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis, known for Sassicaia and other landmark Tuscan wines, joined in the 1970s and helped push the winery toward more serious, terroir-focused winemaking.
