Zuccardi - Blanc de Blanc - Sparkling - 2018

The Zuccardi family farms some of the highest vineyards in Mendoza, and this is their serious sparkler: Chardonnay from Tupungato in the Uco Valley, made in the traditional Champagne method and rested a full 48 months on the lees. That is more aging than most vintage Champagne gets. Altitude keeps the acidity electric while the lees build toast and honey. Pour it blind next to grower Champagne at twice the price and enjoy the silence.

Pear, quince and orange peel over honey and toasted bread. Fine, persistent bubbles, a creamy mid-palate with cereal notes, and a long, fresh finish.

Oysters, fried chicken, salty aged cheeses. Or make it the opener that upstages the main event.

Familia Zuccardi is a three-generation Mendoza estate whose Valle de Uco winery focuses on high-altitude, terroir-driven farming; this cuvée comes from Chardonnay grown in Tupungato and is finished on 48 months of lees.
