Anko Malbec 2023 750ml
$25.00
Anko comes from Estancia Los Cardones, a 25-hectare desert estate at 5,700 feet in Salta's Calchaqui Valley, about as far north and as high as Argentine wine gets. Winemakers Jeff Mausbach and Alejandro 'Colo' Sejanovich farm shallow, splintered-shale soils under relentless sun. The Malbec is hand picked, fermented with native yeasts, and aged nine months in French oak, just 10% of it new. Vinous gave the 2023 91 points. It runs darker, stonier and more savory than Mendoza Malbec, and that is the point.
Spices and dried herbs over black fruit on the nose. Concentrated ripe plum and dark berries on the palate with a savory cumin note, firm structure and a mineral, sun-baked finish.
Skirt steak with chimichurri, beef empanadas, or anything that came off a charcoal grill.
Estancia Los Cardones is named for the 30-foot cacti that dot the property. The soil is shallow and rocky with splintered shale at the surface, unique in Salta, and the vineyard gets more than 300 days of sun a year.
