Grandfather is Penfolds' flagship tawny, built through a six-stage solera system with a minimum average blended age of 20 years, individual varietal batches age separately in seasoned old oak for 14 years before joining the final blend. It draws mainly on Barossa Valley Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre and Cabernet. Wine Spectator scored it 94 points, calling it intense, powerful and complex. This is a sipping wine for after dinner, poured two ounces at a time, not a mixer.

Deep amber-mahogany with a green-gold rim. Nutty, vanillin, raisined aromas with malt and toffee. Rich, viscous palate of raisin, walnut and toffee, subtle vanillin oak, and a long, slightly dry finish.
