Tenuta di Nozzole sits just north of Greve, about a thousand rugged acres in the heart of Chianti Classico where vines have grown for seven centuries. The Folonari family, wine people since the 1700s, bought the estate in 1971 and still bottles everything on site. The Riserva is 100 percent Sangiovese, aged 24 months in oak barrels plus three more in bottle. James Suckling gave the 2019 93 points. Sunday ragu wine. Also Tuesday ragu wine.

Crisp red berry and cherry aromas with earthy undernotes. Vibrant, fresh acidity, a backbone of firm but elegant tannins, and a long savory finish at 14 percent.

Bistecca if you can swing it. Otherwise sausage ragu over pappardelle, roast chicken with rosemary, aged pecorino.

The estate covers about 1,000 acres at 984 feet elevation north of Greve. Yields stay low, grapes are hand harvested, fermentation runs in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine ages in oak before estate bottling. Nino Folonari bought Nozzole in 1971; it anchors the family's Tenute Folonari group.
