Torbreck's icon-tier Shiraz from ancient Barossa dirt. The 2020 Factor is 100% Shiraz off old vineyards in Gomersal, Krondorf, Marananga and Ebenezer, many planted in the 1800s and still on their own roots because phylloxera never reached South Australia. It spent 24 months in French oak, 40% new. Erin Larkin of the Wine Advocate gave it 96 points and called it a classic, polished, midnight Torbreck. Big-night Barossa, built for the cellar too.

Satsuma plum, blackberry compote, maraschino, vanilla bean and dark cocoa over dried earth, eucalypt and ironstone. Plush and mouth-filling, dense supple tannins, seamless oak, enormous length.

Charred ribeye, lamb shoulder slow-roasted to collapse, short-rib ragu on a cold night.

Torbreck sources from 19th-century Barossa Valley plantings that escaped the global phylloxera outbreak thanks to South Australia's quarantine, surviving on their own roots as clonal time capsules. Fruit for The Factor comes from Gomersal, Krondorf, Marananga and Ebenezer.
