Same famous handshake, earlier vintage. The Mondavi and Rothschild families have made Opus One in Oakville since 1979, and 2018 handed them a long, steady growing season. The blend runs 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and a point of Malbec. Polished straight out of the bottle, silky tannins, perfumed violet and white pepper lift, with a drinking window running to 2043. If someone wants Opus at its most elegant rather than its most massive, hand them the 2018.

Boysenberry, warm cassis and ripe black plum with lilac, oolong tea, cinnamon and tilled earth. Tightly layered black fruit, firm grainy tannins, fresh, very long.

Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.
