Acumen - Mountainside Cabernet - 2019

Acumen is a relatively young Atlas Peak estate, founded in 2012 by entrepreneur Eric Yuan with founding winemaker Denis Malbec, whose resume includes Chateau Latour. Phillip Titus, longtime winemaker at Chappellet on Pritchard Hill, later took over the cellar. The Mountainside bottling is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc from the estate's mountain vineyards, aged in 80% new French oak. This is mountain Cabernet built with real structure -- age it a few years, or open it now with a steak.

Blackberry, cassis and black cherry lead, with graphite, crushed violets and cedar underneath, plus dark chocolate, tobacco and baking spice. Full-bodied and firm, with grainy tannins and a long, spicy finish.

Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.

Acumen farms 84 acres on Napa's Atlas Peak, above the valley floor. Founding winemaker Denis Malbec, who cut his teeth at Chateau Latour, built the house style; Phillip Titus, who spent three decades at Chappellet on Pritchard Hill, now oversees winemaking. The estate expanded in 2014 with the higher-elevation Edcora Vineyard.
