Backhouse is the Burgundian-varietal side project from O'Neill Vintners, a California producer with winemaking roots back to the 1930s. Founder Jeff O'Neill built it to make approachable Pinot Noir and Chardonnay without the price tag those grapes usually carry. The Pinot Noir fruit is drawn largely from Lodi, made with no oak, and finished as an easy, everyday red rather than something built to age. It's the kind of Pinot you open on a Tuesday.

Ripe strawberry and cherry aromas with a soft, elegant palate of red berries and dark cherry. No oak, so it stays light on its feet with a smooth, unfussy finish. 13.5% ABV.

Classic matches for Pinot Noir: Salmon, roast duck, mushroom risotto, a charcuterie board that means business.

Backhouse is O'Neill Vintners' second label, founded by Jeff O'Neill. The winery draws its Pinot Noir fruit largely from Lodi and skips oak aging entirely to keep the wine fresh and food-friendly.
