The second local from Barrel Oak in Delaplane. Their 2022 Meritage flips the usual Bordeaux script: Petit Verdot leads at 35%, backed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine Enthusiast reviewed it as soft, lower in tannin and drinking great right now, with room to age. Winemaker Jeremy Ligon, a second-generation Virginia hand, built it friendly young. A Virginia Bordeaux blend for burger night or the cellar. Your call.
Bright cherry, plum and vanilla, then clove and star anise. Soft mid-palate with tannin that keeps softening. Drinks well now and will hold toward 2030.
Cheeseburgers, flank steak, a board with sharp cheddar and salami.
Barrel Oak's 30-acre estate in Virginia's Piedmont, just east of the Blue Ridge, has grown ten varieties since 2006. Northern Virginia Magazine has named it Best Winery every year since 2012.
