Bava - Ruche di Castagnole Monferato - 2022

Ruché is one of Italy's rarest native reds, and Bava has been growing it in Cocconato, in the Monferrato hills, since their family first planted vines there around 1600. They built their first cellar in 1911, and four generations later it's still a family operation working 50 hectares sustainably. The wine sees no oak at all, by design: Ruché doesn't take to wood, so Bava ferments and ages it entirely in steel and bottles it in spring, letting the perfume develop after bottling. An aromatic, floral red you won't find on many other shelves.

Heady rose and violet aromatics with a streak of white pepper spice. Soft, warm and persistent on the palate, with sweet, light tannins and gentle acidity. Drinks like perfume in a glass.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

The Bava family has farmed vines in Cocconato, in the Monferrato Astigiano, since around 1600, and built their first cellar there in 1911. Today's 50-hectare estate is run sustainably by the fourth generation. Ruché is fermented and aged only in stainless steel, never wood, to protect its delicate rose-and-violet perfume.
