Beronia - Rioja Reserva - 2018

Beronia was founded in 1973 by a group of friends from a San Sebastián gastronomic club who wanted a serious wine for their dinners; González Byass bought the winery in 1982 but kept the winemaking team in place. Based in Ollauri, in Rioja Alta, this Reserva blends Tempranillo with Mazuelo and Graciano and spends 20 months in French and American oak. James Suckling scored the 2018 at 92 points. A classic, oak-forward Rioja built for the table.

Deep black plum color with a garnet rim. Roasted almonds and walnuts on the nose alongside plum and a touch of white pepper. Full-bodied, with balanced acidity and a smooth, sweet finish of cacao and roasted hazelnuts.

Beronia is headquartered in Ollauri, in Rioja Alta, where it owns 25 hectares around the winery and controls another 87 within a 10-kilometer radius. Winemaker Matías Calleja, who joined before the 1982 González Byass acquisition, has shaped the house style for decades.
