Don Bernardo Weinert bought a derelict 1890 building in Luján de Cuyo in 1975 and turned it into one of Mendoza's great old-school cellars, thick stone walls doing the work of climate control for wines that age years in French and Slovenian oak. Carrascal is the entry point into that world: 40% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, from a Chacras de Coria vineyard partway through organic conversion. Eighteen months in oak gives it real structure for the price. Plums, dark cherry, leather and tobacco, built to sit through a whole meal.

Ripe plum, dark cherry and violet on the nose, with leather, tobacco and cedar underneath. Full-bodied, soft round tannins, dark fruit, spice and forest floor on the finish. Long and smooth.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

Don Bernardo Weinert, a German-Brazilian vintner, restored a landmark 1890 building in Luján de Cuyo starting in 1975, working with Raúl de la Mota, considered the father of modern Argentine winemaking. The underground cellars hold barrels up to 44,000 liters, including one built in the early 1900s, reputedly the largest barrel still in use in Latin America.
