Cantine Ermes - ‘Epicentro’ - Nero D’Avola Riserva - 2018

Cantine Ermes is a cooperative winery founded in 1998 in Sicily's Belice Valley, a region rebuilt after a devastating 1968 earthquake leveled its towns. Epicentro is their Riserva Nero d'Avola, aged roughly eighteen months in large oak barrels and six more in bottle before release. The result is dark and structured: ruby red with violet edges, cocoa and roasted coffee over cherry and mineral. It's a serious, age-worthy Sicilian red at an everyday price. Open it with something rich enough to meet it.

Roasted coffee, cocoa and toasted oak over cherry and wild fruit, with close-grained tannins and a long, fruity finish that closes on a pleasant bitter edge.

Cantine Ermes was founded in 1998 in the Belice Valley, between the towns of Gibellina and Santa Ninfa, an area that was rebuilding after the 1968 earthquake destroyed much of the region. It remains a cooperative winery today.
