Casa E. di Mirafiore is Barolo with a royal birth certificate. The Serralunga d'Alba estate was bought in 1858 by King Vittorio Emanuele II for the son he had with Rosa Vercellana, and the count's winery was making famous Barolo by 1878. Revived in 2009 alongside Fontanafredda, the house now farms organically. This is 100% Nebbiolo from estate vineyards, macerated long and aged in big oak casks the traditional way. Serralunga pedigree at a price real Barolo rarely hits.
Rose, red cherry, nutmeg and licorice on the nose. Cherry, plum, black pepper and a graphite edge on the palate, with serious but polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, tightening finish.
Braised short ribs, tajarin with butter and sage, aged Toma. Give it an hour in a decanter if you open it young.
The Mirafiore estate sits in Serralunga d'Alba, heart of Barolo's most structured commune. The modern house, reborn in 2009 with Fontanafredda, farms certified organic and works with long macerations and maturation in large oak casks to soften Nebbiolo's grip without losing its spine.
