Castello di Bossi's Gran Selezione is 100% Sangiovese from organically farmed vines around a thousand-year-old castle in Castelnuovo Berardenga, the top tier of Chianti Classico's classification system. The Bacci family bought the estate in the early 1980s and has since converted the whole property to organic farming, running it partly on solar power. The 2018 is serious, savory Sangiovese built for the table, not sipping -- structured tannin and real length. This is the bottle for someone who wants Chianti Classico's top category, not the everyday bottling.

Violet, pipe tobacco, new leather and camphor lead into dried cherry, blood orange, licorice and mocha. Fine-grained tannins carry a savory, well-balanced palate to a long finish.

Grilled meats or a winter stew -- this wants char and slow-cooked richness, not delicate food.

Castello di Bossi is built around a castle first fortified in 1099, in the heart of Castelnuovo Berardenga. The Bacci family bought the estate in the early 1980s and has since gone fully organic across the property, adding a four-hectare solar array. Gran Selezione is their top bottling, made from the best Sangiovese the estate's roughly 310 acres produce.
