Catena Alta is Catena Zapata's single-varietal reserve tier, and the Historic Rows bottling blends fruit from five of the family's oldest, most studied vineyard lots -- Angelica, La Piramide, Nicasia, Angelica Sur and a parcel of the high-altitude Adrianna site in Gualtallary. Nicolas Catena planted Adrianna in 1992 at nearly 5,000 feet, a bet that reshaped Argentine Malbec. Unfined and unfiltered, the 2018 shows the ripeness and evolution of a warmer vintage. Pour it for anyone who thinks they've already figured out Malbec.

Blackberry, blueberry, violet and green tea up front, with plum, black olive and jarilla on the nose. Herbal and smoky notes weave through supple tannin and vibrant acidity, finishing long and structured.

Classic matches for Malbec: Steak. Also steak. Grilled anything, empanadas, hard cheeses.

Nicolas Catena planted the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, Uco Valley, in 1992, at nearly 5,000 feet -- unheard of at the time and now studied as intensively as any vineyard in South America. Catena Alta draws old-vine lots from Adrianna alongside four other historic family sites, giving this bottling its reserve-tier depth.
