Catena Zapata is the winery that made the world take Malbec seriously, a fourth-generation Mendoza family that planted high-altitude vineyards when everyone said the fruit would never ripen. This 2022 sits in their top tier, grown from the family's own selection of Malbec cuttings in the high Uco Valley and raised in French oak. Expect black fruit, violets and a stony finish that puts it in conversation with wines twice the price. Decant it for an hour, or better, cellar it five years.

Blackberries, blueberries and cassis wrapped in violets. Creamy dark fruit through the mid-palate with vanilla and spice cake, then mineral, white pepper and dark chocolate notes lingering on a supple, focused finish.

Classic matches for Malbec: Steak. Also steak. Grilled anything, empanadas, hard cheeses.

The Catena family has farmed Mendoza since 1902 and pioneered extreme high-elevation plantings in the Uco Valley, where vineyards like Nicasia in Altamira sit near 1,100 meters on shallow loam over gravelly dry riverbed. The flagship Malbecs are planted to the proprietary Catena cuttings selection.
