Château des Antonins occupies a 13th century convent built for monks of the Order of Saint Antoine, in Pondaurat on the left bank of the Garonne near Graves. The Roquefeuil family has held it since the French Revolution. Geoffroy and Martine took charge in 1985, and their son Antoine came home from New Zealand in 2016 to learn the vines alongside his father. The reds run 65 percent Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Cabernet Franc. Proper claret at a Tuesday price.

Fresh, peppery nose of cassis, wild raspberry, black cherry and a whiff of tobacco. Medium-bodied and smooth, supple dark fruit, soft tannins, saline lift running through a warm, rounded finish.

Roast chicken, steak frites, a burger upgraded with good cheddar. Classic bistro territory.

The estate farms 31 hectares of red vines on a silico-gravelly slope plus 7 hectares of whites, certified High Environmental Value level 3 since the 2018 harvest. Production is about 250,000 bottles a year of Bordeaux Supérieur, Bordeaux red, white and rosé.
