Chateau La Nerthe - Cuvee des Cadettes - Chateauneuf-du-Pape - 2016
$174.99
Cuvee des Cadettes is Chateau La Nerthe's top red, a 52% Grenache, 38% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre blend from one of the oldest properties in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The 2016 is a slow-developing, powerful wine that critics scored in the mid-90s and pegged for a decade-plus of cellaring. Buy it for someone's cellar, not tonight's dinner, though if you must open it now, decant hard and serve with something rich.
Deep ruby with an explosive nose of red fruit preserve, floral pastille, exotic spice, vanilla and woodsmoke. Cassis, graphite and spicy wood on the palate, full-bodied and powerful with integrated acidity and a long, structured finish.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
The estate dates to the 12th century, with the chateau built in 1736 by the Tulle de Villefranche family. La Nerthe was among the first Chateauneuf-du-Pape properties to bottle its own wine, around 1784, and among the first to export beyond France. The Richard family restored it in 1985 and certified it organic in 1998.
