Chateau Lalande de Pez - Saint Estephe - Rouge - 2019

Don't confuse this with Château de Pez down the road — Lalande de Pez is its own small estate in Saint-Estèphe, run by Jean-François Bouilleau off about 4 hectares. The 2019 blends 53% Merlot with 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.5% Petit Verdot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc at 13% ABV, a Merlot-led approach that's less common in this appellation of big Cabernet houses. The result is softer and more approachable than the neighborhood norm: strawberry jam and black cherry, silky tannins, ready sooner than most Saint-Estèphe.

Strawberry jam and black cherry, soft in texture with silky tannins and a pleasant brioche note on the finish. Approachable now, without the tannic grip typical of the appellation.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

A small, roughly 4-hectare estate in Saint-Estèphe owned by Jean-François Bouilleau, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2019 leans Merlot-forward in the blend, which explains the softer style relative to its Cabernet-dominant neighbors.
