Couly-Dutheil - Chinon Rouge - 'Les Gravieres' - 2021

Couly-Dutheil has farmed Chinon since 1921, when Baptiste Dutheil planted the family's first vines; today a fourth-generation Couly runs 90 hectares that are 98% Cabernet Franc. Les Gravières is 100% Cabernet Franc at 13.5% alcohol. Violets and cherry blossom lead the nose, backed by raspberry and baking spice. The palate turns juicy, with grippy tannins and real structure. Classic Loire Cab Franc, built for a bistro table on a Tuesday, not a special occasion.

Couly-Dutheil was founded in 1921 by Baptiste Dutheil and is now run by fourth-generation winemaker Arnaud Couly. The family farms 90 hectares around Chinon, 98% Cabernet Franc, including the legendary walled monopole Clos de l'Echo.
